LPS QUBIT COLLABORATORY

The LPS Qubit Collaboratory (LQC) is a national Quantum Information Science Research Center hosted at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park. The LQC pursues disruptive qubit research, innovative workforce development programs, and deep, collaborative partnerships to tackle some of the hardest open problems in quantum information science and technology.

HOW THE LQC CAME TO BE

The National Quantum Initiative Act legislated new QIS Research Centers, a quantum industry consortium, and coordinating fundtions. The National Defense Authorization Acts of 2019 and 2020 called for Department of Defense participation in the NQI, including designation of DOD QIS Research Centers.

In November 2020, LPS was designated a DOD QIS Research Center with the LQC being the embodiment of that vision. A collaboratory is a center without walls in which the nations researchers can perform their research without regard to physical location, interacting with colleagues, accessing instrumentation, sharing data and computational resources, [and] accessing information in digital libraries (Wulf, 1989).

LQC PARTNERS

LPS was founded on the campus of the University of Maryland in 1957. For over 60 years LPS has trained generations of future scientists and engineers in partnership with local universities. LPS is a founding member of the JQI, QuICS, and the MIT CQE.

The LQC’s growing list of partners include (in chronological):

  • Physics Department, University of Maryland, College Park

  • Joint Quantum Institute, University of Maryland, College Park

  • Center for Quantum Materials, University of Maryland, College Park

  • QuICS, University of Maryland, College Park

  • MIT Center for Quantum Engineering

  • Lincoln Laboratory

  • Physics Department, University of Arkansas

  • University of Texas, El Paso

LPS SOLID-STATE AND QUANTUM PHYSICS PROGRAMS

Since 1993, LPS has funded the quantum computing research community in the United States and around the world. Find out more here.

LPS, in partnership with ARO, funds (via Broad Agency Announcments and other mechanisms) a broad array of quantum computing and related research. This research program has changed substanially over the decades and presently includes these major programs:

  • HiPS

  • QiS

  • SHiFT

  • QCISS

  • NEQST

  • CQTS

INTRAMURAL RESEARCH

Beginning in 2000, LPS began active internal research in quantum information science. The LQC builds on these research labs expanding to new labs and research directions and adding substantial additional resources for collaborative research and quantum training.

LQC OPEN POSITIONS

The Laboratory for Physical Sciences, located at the University of Maryland-College Park, is a unique organization where university, industry, and federal government scientists collaborate on research in advanced computer, sensing, and networking technologies. Working at LPS can take the form of government, UMD, and industry positions at multiple skill levels. See below for current opportunities.
